Our Mission

Zion Lutheran School serves as an extension of the ministry of Zion Lutheran Church by offering the best possible Christian education for as many students as we can, through God's grace.

Our Goal

Everyone at Zion Lutheran School will be confronted with the Gospel of Jesus Christ every day.

Our Directive

“Dear Children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18

IMPORTANT CALENDAR NOTES: Next Wednesday, September 30th there will be NO BUS SERVICE HOME. However, there will be BUS SERVICE TO SCHOOL, as MCHS will be having a half day of school, while Zion has a full day of attendance. SCHOOL WILL DISMISS AROUND 1:45 NEXT FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2ND, to allow our students who wish to see the MCHS homecoming parade the opportunity to do this. There will be NO BUS SERVICE HOME that day. Students are on their own at dismissal and will not be supervised by school staff if they are watching the parade. Please plan accordingly, for your child’s safety.

Blessings and safe travel to the Preschool 4 and Kindergarten classes as they head to the Royal Oak Apple Orchard next week Monday.

WORSHIP SERVICES: Service times and acoloytes for this weekend are: Saturday 6:00 (Eric Martin), Sunday 8:00(Ethan Diedrick), Sunday 10:30(Robin Mathieson), and Monday 6:30(Robert Meurett). Blessings to all of our families as they worship. Our grades 7th & 8th grade students (you do not have to be a Zion member) will sing at the 8:00AM service this Sunday (27th).

CHAPEL: Our chapel service next Wednesday begins at 8:10AM. Our worship leader for next week is Pastor Pfingsten from Harvard. The Preschool and Kindergarten classes will sing in chapel and then again on Sunday, October 4th at 10:30 for those who are attending worship at Zion. All are welcome and invited to attend school chapel worship services. We will celebrate September baptismal birthdays at the end of the chapel service.

THE GIVING PLUS matching grant program at Zion has resulted in $40,065 for this year. We are thankful to Thrivent Financial Services for this tremendous support for our Lutheran Schools. Contact the church or school office to find out how you can have your gifts to Zion generate even more help for the ministry. This is the last year for the Giving Plus program (a different benevolent program will start next April), so we are advised by Thrivent to make our gifts to Giving Plus now. Please consider this carefully.

The TEACHEREASE online grade program, grades 4-8, is now open to parents. Please let us know about any problems or concerns you may experience and bear with us as we enter into this new service for our school families. Parents who wish to communicate via email with Mr. Steltenpohl may do so at William.Steltenpohl@lsportal.net (case sensitive). However, if you have concerns with specific personnel at Zion, please share directly with them first. Any information or concerns sent via email will be shared in full with all personnel that are involved or referenced, as will any information shared in direct conversations. It is proper (see Matthew 18) that if you have a concern with someone, you will have already shared this directly with them to try to resolve it first. This is in keeping with biblical principles and Zion school policy. We will try hard to welcome honest and constructive sharing of concerns, and we will try even harder to avoid gossip and hurtful criticism.

READING PARTNERS: Our reading partners for our first grade students will begin on October 6th. The reading partner time is from approximately 10:00-11:00 AM on Tuesday, when school is in session. All past partners are invited to come and assist again. If you are new to reading partners, or want more information, contact Mrs. Jones, Miss Kanaly, or Mr. Steltenpohl at school (568-5156). Thanks!

ATHLETICS

THE ZION ATHLETIC CALENDAR IS NOW LIVE AND BEEN LINKED TO THE ZION WEBSITE. Check this link to get those most current schedules and to find directions to all away games in the details of each event. (Our thanks to Bob Meyn, Zion athletic director, for his work on this.)

Our VOLLEYBALL AND CROSS COUNTRY seasons are off to a great start this year. As a reminder to all parents who have children involved at Zion, your participation is needed to ensure a prosperous athletic program. Currently, we need volunteers to help with concessions and admissions during our home Volleyball games. Sign-up sheets are located in the school office. Thank you in advance, and GO PANTHERS!

The 3RDANNUAL CASTLE CHALLENGE will kick off at the Marengo/Harvard football game at MCHS on Friday, Sept. 25th. This is a chance to support the athletic programs at Marengo and Harvard high schools Tickets are now on sale at the high school athletic offices, Castle Bank locations, and by the student athletes. A poster is up at Zion with more information, or call Lesley Pace at 815-568-7252, ext 6235 for more information.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART - The children of Zion did a great job jumping this week. We ask that you bring in all donations for the American Heart Association by tomorrow. If you collected donations on line, remember to go to your web page, click on the MY PROGRESS tab and select the link to print your GIFT HISTORY report to enclose in your collection envelope. Be sure to write your online fund-raising total on your envelope so that it’s included in your school’s overall fund-raising total. Thanks to everyone who jumped and donated to the American Heart Association. What a great way to show your love to others and Jesus.

A GREAT BIG THANK YOU to Jon Rogutich for setting up the speaker system for Jump Rope for Heart and to Shelia Trah for our upbeat music while jumping. REMEMBER: ALL MONIES FOR AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION SHOULD BE TURNED IN BY SEPTEMBER 30TH to Mrs. Koplin. As of Tuesday night we have raised $1582. Thanks!

Cross Country Notes:

Last Friday the team ran at Veteran’s Acres in Crystal Lake – The varsity boys took 2nd place with 45 points just three points more than the first place, St. Thomas. The varsity girls also took 2nd place with 39 points just two points behind the winning team, St. Thomas. The boy’s team in particular had “good clumpage!” If you wonder what that is & why it might be good – ask your local cross country runner. All of our runners are enjoying watching their times improve as they continue to work out.

Make sure to check out our meet schedule on Zion’s website under athletics. Upcoming dates:

Friday – 9/25 meet at Cole Bokowy’s home for “our run”

Wed. – 9/30 Home meet at Indian Oaks – 4:15 race time.

Friday – 10/2 Practice – Marengo Ridge Conservation District

Sat. 10/3 – Meet in Arlington Heights – Letter to Follow

Sunday 10/4 – THE ZION SHUFFLE – a great training run for all you parents who plan to run at STATE. Also a great way to earn $ for our PE department.

Friday – 10/9 – The team travels out of state for the Lake Country Lutheran run.

Thursday 10/15 – 1.5 Miles Location to be Announced

SCHOOL ABSENCES: Please note that if you are aware that your child will be absent in advance, you are asked to fill out a planned absence form (available in the school office). While we understand that sudden or emergency circumstances occur from time-to-time, it helps classroom management and planning very much if we are aware in advance of absences. We appreciate the special efforts our Zion parents make to have their children in class when they are well and able to learn. Thank you for this assistance in the learning process.
